Aquaculture or fish farming started with the Chinese around 2,500 BC. It is thought that after a flood carp were trapped in lakes and that the Chinese started to feed and breed these carp as a source of food. This lead to the genetic mutation of goldfish. The Romans also used lakes as fish farms, and this practise was also used in the Middle Ages to supply monasteries and manor houses with a regular supply of fresh fish. So, in answer to your question, the first attempts at Aquaculture happened some 4,500 years ago, and has grown through experience to the massive business it is today.
