Although the construction details of the Chobham Common armour remain a secret, it has been described as being composed of ceramic tiles encased within a metal matrix and bonded to a backing plate and several elastic layers.

What is the armor made out of on armored vehicles?

There's no set answer for that question. A vehicle like the M-113 Armored Personell Carrier has aluminum armor in it's original form. Then it had more modern forms of armor. The British Challenger tank has something called Chobham armor, which is quite frankly of unknown composition. Same thing applies to our M1A1 and M1A2 main battle tanks. It's quite simply a secret, although it's believe to contain a honeycomb with ceramic layers and some reactive element. That means the armor has explosive plates on it which explode when a projectile is sensed near it. This protects the armor underneath from the projectile.
