The teachers don't always figure in the good grades until much later, or until your parents find out about that test that you bombed. The good thing about grades is that if you keep your grades up and study a good bit, you can get some recognition in your class, or even a scholarship to a college, if you are really good. A negative is that often the education can be quantified as a number and students begin to care less about the learning and more about the grade. Extreme examples lead to cheating and plagarism. Letter grades are good in the fact that they are largely universal and can offer a comparison of grades between students. However, this is often not the case because classes and different teacher's grading systems are different in different classes and schools. The problem is that often times the same amount of work and studying would constitute an A in one teacher's class could be a B in another's class simply because one teacher's class is harder than the others. The letter grading system has no way to account for this.

The pros are that the parents can see how good or bad they're doing. Another one is that the students will work haredr to get better grades. The cons are getting bad grades and some students might feel overworked.

Some of the other con's as well are that they only reflective academic performance, not character. Just because the student gets straight A's doesn't necessarily mean he/she is also a good person
