What are the pros and cons of lowering the voting age?

PROS:

· In today's world, 16 year olds are more mature and there is no signifigant difference between the voting ability of a 16 year old's and an 18 year old

· Since their old enough to work, they should be able to vote

· Getting young people to vote while still living in stable conditions may set good voting habits and they may continue to vote as adults

· The more people voting, the more votes a party can get

· Many 18 year olds start to leave home for the first time. They are in a new environment and are more unlikely to vote. By lowering the age to 16, they have a feeling of how to vote and are more likley to vote when they grow up

· Since 16 year old pay taxes, they should be allowed to vote

· Believing that 16 year olds won't vote well is wrong. You may believe that 16 year olds will vote for Mickey Mouse or Britney Spears but 16 year olds who have no intrest to vote won't vote.

· If a 16 year old can be charged as an adult, they sould be allowed to vote

· A study from Professor James Flynn said that the majority of 16 year olds are smarter than their parents.

· In Lower Saxony in Germany, when they lowered the voting age to 16, more 16 year olds showed up than 18-24

· We teach our children about the government but they will eventually lose interest as they wait to turn 18. Also, an election usually only happens every 4 years so they technically don't vote until 20 or 21

16 year olds are the perfect age to start voting. They can talk about issues at school and home. Also, if a 16 year old wants to vote, their parents will have to bring them to the voting booth witch will highly likely bring the voting turnout up.

CONS:

· 16 year olds are not mature enough

· Young people may not take voting seriously

· Many 18-24 don't currently vote so why would 16 year olds want to vote

· Allowing young people to vote would only widen the pool of uninformed voters-and the current status quo protects against that.

· Just because 16 year olds have the right to do some things, doesn't mean that they can do everything. Because voting is so important, it should be one of the last rights given.

· Should 12 year olds be allowed to vote because of school policies, should toddlers be allowed to vote because health services affect them? No. We trust the parents to make the best decisions for their families. There are also other ways for minors to have a say such as having a protest.

By allowing 16 year olds to vote, they may vote for someone who will allow the use of an illegal drug or make a bad drug cheaper.
