Road salt or grit is put onto the roads in bad whether conditions to help the tyres grip the the road, to reduce wheels slipping/slidding and reduces the probability of the vehicle loosing control. Another reason for salting the roads is that it actually soaks up the moisture, improving the chances of the road drying when the whether improves.

Salt water maks it very hard for water to freeze. So when the ice melts from the artic the water that was once pure becomes salted. Now it can't freeze fast anymore. This is why people salt paths in winter, it melts the ice. Also salt disturbes the chemical balance in soil to help plants grow.
When salt is used on streets to combat icing, it causes damage. It not only damages vehicles, it damages the very roads that the salt is meant to make safe. Excessive salt damages soil and hampers the growth of plants and trees.

There are no household items made from halite because halite is just the geological name for rock salt. You can't make anything but seasoning out of salt unless you're using it to salt a road in winter and that's not a household item either.
