Quarter horses are named that because they can run a Quarter of a mile really fast. They had races in the old days for a quarter of a mile and they would use Quarter horses for them. Now Quarter Horses aren't as popular for racing, because Thoroughbreds have better stamina.

The Quarter horse orignated in America from English Thoroughbred horses crossed with several native breeds residing in America in the 17th century. From there, Arabian, Morgan and Standardbred bloodlines were added to benefit the breed. In 1940, they were regonized as a formal breed of horse by the founding of the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA).

The principle development of the Quarter Horse was in the southwestern part of the United States in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, eastern Colorado, and Kansas. Some breed historians have maintained that it is the oldest breed of horses in the United States and that the true beginning of the Quarter Horse was in the Carolinas and Virginia.

The "quarter" portion of the name (I hope the "horse" part is obvious) comes from the fact that they were specifically bred to have good performance in a run of a quarter of a mile: they're essentially the "sprinters" of horses (for comparison, the Kentucky Derby is five times that distance).
