Well if they were people actually fighting in the war probably because it might be their last day living and if it was people not in the war probably because they might be scared for families or friends of just the thought of lots of people dying.
Because war causes genocide, rape, murder, destruction. The average person fears things like this

I oppose most such intervention because most of the things we get involved in are not our problem and could be remedied without losing the lives of my people in a war that is really not our problem.

They weren't scared of them, they just knew that they were mad and ready to attack. England had bigger ships, and England had more weapons, so there is no need to be scared of the Spanish. I bet that both groups were scared at some point...its a mini war for crying out loud! :D
