The music industry feels that the practice of making copies of music is stealing. If people simply share music by making copies of it rather than buying it, than the recording executives selling the music can't make money.
In the past, people would make copies of music using cassette recorders. These copies were usually poor in quality, and inconvenient to produce. However, digital copies of music never deteriorate with time, and can be copied without sacrifices in quality. This is the first time in history that it is possible to give another person and exact copy of something that is only legally available by purchase.

Record companies are very keen to stop music sharing because it does not make them any money. From a typical CD sale, let's say £10, the band or artist will receive around £1. That means if you're a band of 4 people you get 25p each. A shop will purchase the CD for around £8 and the rest is the record companies, though obviously they will have paid for marketing and production costs etc. If people share music, quite simply put, the record company gets no money. It can't be that surprising that they don't like that idea! The band will not be all that concerned, as they will make far more money playing live than they will selling records, though unfortunately it is a bit of a vicious circle, for if the record company no longer releases the bands' music, they will not be able to play in such prominent venues and earn as much money....
