Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo was the President of Equatorial Guinea in 2011. He took power in 1979 August 3, in a coup-d'etat, overthrowing the first president, Francisco Macías Nguema. A national referendum in 1982 approved his presidency for 7 years, and in 1989 he was elected president for the first time. He has continued to be elected every 7 years, although most observers consider the elections fraudulent.
