Actually, Santa doesn't have a horse. He has Reindeer named... Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, vixon, Comit, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen, And Rudolph. If you leave a snack for them, I recomend carrots not hay.

I believe it's derived from hippo (horse) drome (arena) where horse races used to take part. It's no more common to use as a theatre or arena of some kind
