During the spring and autumn bird migration season, the building must turn off its signature lights on foggy nights so confused birds won't fly into the building.
The masonry for the structure was completed on May 1, 1931, significantly ahead of schedule. On that date, President Herbert Hoover pressed a button in Washington, D.C. to officially open the building by turning on the Empire State Building's lights

The Freedom Lights were four large revolving beacons installed in 1956 at the 90th floor level at the base of the building's television antenna. The lights were five feet in diameter and weighed one ton each.
