What does beyond his release date mean?

There are possibly a number of answers to this question. Two that come to mind are 1. If an offender is sentenced to a number of days in prison for one offence, the release date may be extended further for a minor offence which was later to have found to been committed. 2. For the prisoners own safety they may be kept within the walls of the prison after release their release date. 3. A prisoner may have committed some offence within the prison which would warrent them serving extra time. It also could mean that a member of the armed forces about to be discharged could volunteer for an extra period of service.
