Each employer has there own version of what is acceptable and what is not unfortunately. So the rules for you should be simple depending on the job you are doing. If you need to wear any form of PPE (personal protective equipment) the piercings should not impede the protection offered by the equipment ( goggles should fit over eyebrow piercings, head phones or hearing protectors should still be able to seal around your ears, face masks or respirators should still be able to seal around the nose and mouth ).

Common sense and your safety need to be addressed when at work and safety equipment should protect you as it is designed to, if it doesn't due to your jewellery then obviously the jewellery needs to be removed during working hours. That is the way it is and you need to come to terms with that requirement. Now as for visual appearance, that's simple, if it can be see then it needs to be covered, if it can't be covered and it's causing issues with your employer and his/her clients then you need to find another job.

Planning and your future are your responsibility, if you want a tattoo and it's going to cause issues at work plan to place it so it can be covered. But don't go getting a tattoo just to try to push your rights to freedom of expression. It's just going to get your butt fired (they can come up with dozens of reasons not to keep you on payroll besides your tattoo or piercing). I have worked in various industries where tattoos and piercings were not acceptable during working hours, many of my co workers had both and simply covered or removed the jewellery with no issues from the high brass.

You need to work to survive and that means you need to play by the employers rules within reason.

There are employers who have supervisors on staff that are just unreasonable and ask for the moon, these clowns need to be put in there places, but is that a fight you need to take on? No let someone else fight that fight you just want to do your job, get your cheque and live your life, so do so, but do it in a way that won't cause you any grief. If you have questions about dress code and conduct at your place of employment call your human resources department and ask them for the employee guidelines for dress code and conduct and go from there. Larger firms have a standing policy for jewellery and dress code which you can check just by asking. Don't always assume the supervisor yelling in your face is right, check it out for your self, call your HR department and ask.

The impact of body piercings and tattoos on employers and their employees?

No impact if the employer is cool. Potentially a large impact if they're not. It's all a matter of opinion and totally arbitrary rules. Or, often, they don't even HAVE rules against it but fire people for having piercings or tattoos anyway (or tell them to remove piercings).
