For single letter elements it is ALWAYS a capital letter. ; e.g. Carbon (C)
For two letter elements it a Capital letter followed by a small case letter. e.g. Calcium (Ca)
There are no triple letter elements. This follows through when writing compounds . e.g. water (H2O) and Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3)
H2O means two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen.
CaCO3 means, one atom of calcium, one atom of carbon, and three atoms of oxygen.
The number should be written 'Subscript' except when written as a prefix number, when it is normal size script. e.g. 2H2O means two molecules of water H2O + H2O
