Sputnik 1 is the first satellite to be put into orbit and it was done by the Russians. It contributed largely to the Red Scare of Communist Russia against the U.S. Other than that i dont know much more...yet Explorer 1 was the USA's answer to the Soviet Union, it was their first ever satellite.
There are several thousand satellites in orbit around the Earth. Possibly the best known is the International Space Station, which is big enough to be easily seen when it passes over in the evening or early morning. (You can see a schedule of when the ISS is due to pass over your house at spaceweather.com.)
If you have a Garmin or a Magellan or a TomTom, or a modern cell phone, you may also be using some of the 36 Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites. Or if you watch the news on TV, you have probably seen satellite weather photos; there are dozens. Do you watch TV? Or listen to Sirius Satellite Radio? There are several satellites of each variety.
