A gallon of your common domestic bleach poured into a well will totally dissipate within a few hours, yet will have killed many microbes in the water. Domestic bleach is usually about 2% chlorine. When I clean a contaminated well I use 68% granulated chlorine and it kills all biological impurities, yet will disappear in about 3-4 days and cause little side effects. Naturally, people cannot drink the water during this period.
