Well, one of the biggest signs is an awful temper. But that's all I know. Other people may want to add other symptoms onto this. -------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bipolar disorder otherwise known as 'Manic depression' is characterized by the fluctuation of moods from depression to mania. This fluctuation can sometimes be rapid. There is an extremely high rate of suicide for people who suffer from Bipolar disorder. The person will fluctuate between a depressed mood which will include symptoms such as: * A depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day. This will be indicated by a subjective report or the observation made by others. * A diminished interest and/or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities most of the day nearly every day. * Great fatigue and loss of energy nearly ever day.

* Insomnia or hypersomnia nearly every day. * Lethargy or Psychomotor agitation nearly every day. * Feelings of worthlessness, excessive or inappropriate guilt - again nearly every day. * Significant weight loss when not dieting or weight gain. (A change of atleast 5% of body weight in a month) An increase or decrease in appetite nearly every day. * Indecisiveness or diminished ability to think and concentrate nearly every day. * Recurrent suicide ideation without specific plans, recurrent thoughts of death, plans of suicide or suicide attempts. And periods of mania which includes symptoms such as:

* Increased energy, social and sexual activity. * Decreased need for sleep. * Inflated self-esteem and delusions of grandeur. * Hallucinations. * Distractibility. * Irritability. * Rapid speech - more talkative than usual or an increased pressure to keep talking. * Reckless decisions and actions. The symptoms will not be due to direction physiological effects of substances. The symptoms will be long lasting and recurrent, the fluctuation to a depressive state will not be due to bereavements such as the loss of a loved one. The symptoms must also be seen to be an impairment of that person's normal life before they are diagnosed with Bipolar disorder.

Oppositional defiance disorder is something one grows out of unlike bipolar disorder which is permanent. There are other symptoms as well that can help a parent distinguish whether or that is the case. Bipolar disorder is very difficult to live with and should be diagnosed as soon as possible.
