For some kinds you can tell because the poop has white things in it. Dogs usually will try to bite or lick their rear ends and in some cases they will scoot their butts along the grass or the floor. It is always wise to take a stool sample into your vets a couple of times a year, especially if your dog is out in a grassy area or in the country. Also, if you have a cat that roams around outside the worms can be tranferred to your dog. It really depends on what type of worm. A few signs for a few different types of worms are: loss of appetite, appetite without any weight gain, round like patches of hair loss (like circles), and seeing white squirmy things in its feces.
Usually a tapeworm will look like little pieces of rice on the stool, other worms can cause bleeding, and the dog will appear to be ill or weak from other worms.

if you aren't completely sure the dog has worms, save a few bucks and check its poop.( btw i'm not against the vet, i think they're awesome, but they can be a bit expensive!) i know it sounds gross, but if you look and see small white or brownish yellowish things kinda wiglin, then for sure take him/her to the vet. dogs can die from worms. there is a vaccine against them and hookworms which can kill humans too!!
