They are similar insofar as they both relate to skeletal joint damage pain and inflammation. However osteoarthritis is generally the result of wear and tear or joint trauma as opposed to rheumatoid arthritis being the result of the destruction of joint tissue by the immune system. The effects of Rheumatoid arthritis also reach into other parts to the body's organs and tissue's.

The first difference is that rheumatoid arthritis is an Autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the cartilage in joints and surrounding leading to the joint eventually becoming disabled, and deformed it is the inflammation doing the actual damage. On the other hand In the case of osteoarthritis here we have a situation where the cartilage becomes worn or damaged or the victim of some sort of trauma which caused which can lead to stiffness in joints and in some cases total destruction of the joint, however in this case the inflammation occurs as a result of the damage when bone comes into contact with bone.

Rheumatoid arthritis can also effect the tissue of many of the body's organs from the skin to the brain.

The two most common forms of arthritis are rheumatoid and osteoarthritis. Each type of condition effects the joints of bones in different ways. Rheumatoid arthritis is an elusive condition that can occur at a young age and it results from the body's own immune system attacking the joints. By contrast, osteoarthritis occurs as a result of years of wear and tear in the joints of the body. In general, rheumatoid arthritis causes more severe and long lasting inflammation of the joints.
