They both fire things called 'Bullets'
A sub-machine gun fires pistol cartridges. A machine gun fires rifle rounds.
Machine gun is a much broader category, which includes both current and obsolete models. The Maxim gun is a specific type of machine gun, and an obsolete one, at that.
it shoots a lot of bullets in a short time
They are both made of stone!!
No. It is an assault rifle. It can fire automatically like a machine gun, but only for short bursts because of its fixed barrel and small ammunition capacity.

No, according to RCW 9.41.190: "It is unlawful for any person to manufacture, own, buy, sell, loan, furnish, transport, or have in possession or under control, any machine gun, short-barreled shotgun, or short-barreled rifle; or any part designed and intended solely and exclusively for use in a machine gun, short-barreled shotgun, or short-barreled rifle, or in converting a weapon into a machine gun, short-barreled shotgun, or short-barreled rifle; or to assemble or repair any machine gun, short-barreled shotgun, or short-barreled rifle." You can thank the assault weapons ban for this. There are exceptions though: http://apps.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=9.41.190
machine gun position
The short answer is NO. For a private citizen in the U.S. to own a machine gun, the machine gun would have to have been made AND registered prior to 1986 if it was manufactured in the U.S. If the machine gun in question is foreign made, It would have to have been made AND registered prior to 1968. As for the issue of machine guns brought back from WWII, there was a short amnesty period during which the federal government allowed these guns to be registered, but that time has long passed. So, if you find an old machine gun in the attic of a WWII veteran, turn it in to the police, or destroy it somehow, as the mere possession of that firearm would be a federal offense.
Depends on the machine gun. Anywhere from $100 to several thousand dollars
