Chromatography is a collective term for a family of lab techniques for the separation of the mixtures. It involves a passing a mixture dissolved in a mobile phase through a stationary phase.

Electrophoresis is the process by which molecules (such as proteins, DNA, or RNA fragments) can be separated according to size and electrical charge by applying an electric current to them. Each kind of molecule travels through the medium at a different rate, depending on its electrical charge and molecular size

In the electrophoresis techniques electricity is required and positive charge goes to the cathode whereas the negative charges goes to the anode (opposite charges attraction)

but in Chromatography there is no need for the current or electricity .

electrophoresis:

it is the separation technique based on the charge- size ratio. the molecules which are separating moves at different rate based on 1) charge 2) size 3) pore size of the gel. agarose gel is commonly used. the visibility can be increased upon the addition of fluorescent dyes with the samples. comparative studies are more possible than chromatographic methods.

chromatography:

it is based on the nature of stationary phase and mobile phase. according to the type of separation the stationary phase can be changed. it accommodates all the three forms of a molecule (water, liquid, solid). it is very cheap to set up the experiment compared the electrophoresis.

In paper chromatography molecues are separated by capillary action, which is the attraction forces between the molecules and the paper. In elecrophoresis molecules are separated by charge. The samples are placed at one end of a gel, and a negative charge is applied to the other end of the gel. The molecules are then attracted to and migrate toward the negative charge being applied.

They both result in the separation of molecules, but electrophoresis is more of a banding separation. Hope that helps

2 differences= electrophoresis involves putting molecules into gel. Electricity is needed while paper chromatography does not
