They are both dangerous forces found in nature. Tornado's can strike at any moment, while a volcano can erupt without warning. They both release immense energy but differently. Tornado's have immense kinetic energy and fizzle out. While volcano's have immense potential energy(stored energy) until it is released it by way of massive eruptions. They have a similar cylindrical shape while their sizes vary. The "eye" of a tornado is its center. The "mouth" or "peak" of a volcano is its center. Ironically the eye of a tornado is calm and peaceful while the outer arms of it wreak havoc on anything/anyone is comes in contact with. the mouth of a volcano is where the magma erupts from, causing destruction and chaos below.

I know you asked for "similarities" But I feel it unfair to only give the similarities. Compare and contrast is a much better teaching tool. I also feel that there is more to be said, but I'm tired. Someone please delete this second paragraph and expound upon my thoughts.

Both are types of storm that can produce damaging winds and are fueled by warm, moist air, though tornadoes indirectly so. A tornado is a product of a thunderstorm.
