There are actually two classifications of desert. They are either hot, subtropical or cold deserts. However, cold deserts are subdivided into:1.) Polar deserts (Antarctica, for example). 2.) Cold winter deserts (Gobi, Great Basin, etc.) 3.) Cool coastal deserts (Namib, Atacama)

Arizona has deserts, Alaska does not have any major true deserts. Both Alaska and Arizona have deserts even though they are located in two totally different environments.
It is cold and dark, while most other deserts are hot and extremely sunny.
