The locomotives, (Electric Mules) are used to pull ships through the locks of the canal. Also due to the very close fit of the largest ships (like the panamax tankers), the locomotives work together to maintain ship position within the width of the locks. sometimes there are only inches to spare on each side.

The small electric locomotives used on canals are typically called "canal boats" or "canal tugs." These specialized vessels are designed to assist in the movement of larger barges and cargo along waterways. They often have electric propulsion for efficiency and reduced environmental impact, making them suitable for navigating narrow and confined spaces in canal systems. Their primary function is to tow or push cargo vessels through the canal network.
Panama Canal.
Is this a trick question? Panama...

I am not an expert but my understanding is the electromotive configuration is better suited to locomotives. An internal combustion engine is used to run a generator or alternator and the electricity then runs the electric motors that drive the wheels. +++ The diesel engine IS used in small locomotives, usually with a hydraulic transmission. Larger locomotives use either electric or hydraulic drives but the prime mover is still a diesel engine.
The Panama Canal is a small waterway that separates North America from South America. The canal also connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.
