Standard Modern Hebrew contains five vowel sounds, that are approximately equal to the vowels of Spanish. Any of these vowels may be combined with a y-sound, creating a diphthong:

  1. ah
  2. eh
  3. ee
  4. oh
  5. oo

The 24 (25 if you include the glottal stop) consonant sounds of Hebrew mostly have similar sounds in English, with a few exceptions:

  1. b
  2. ch (English ch sound, but only used in foreign words)
  3. d
  4. f
  5. hard g
  6. h
  7. j (foreign words only)
  8. k
  9. kh (guttural sound, similar to the German CH sound)
  10. l
  11. m
  12. n
  13. ng (only in foreign words)
  14. p
  15. r (Israeli Hebrew this is is a guttural sound, similar to the french r)
  16. s
  17. sh
  18. t
  19. ts (can appear at the beginning of a word)
  20. v
  21. w (only in a few foreign words, like Washington and shawarma)
  22. y
  23. z
  24. zh (like the french J, but only used in foreign words)

There are also 2 consonants only pronounced by Jews from Yemen and other middle Eastern countries. These consonants have no equivalent in English:

  1. Ayin (ע)
  2. Het (ח)
