A cheetah is built for running down its prey at high speed; its body is specialized for high-speed pursuit. Its body is long, lean, light and aerodynamic, like the chassis of a race car. It has long legs that can disconnect from the hip or shoulder sockets, allowing the cat to maximize its stride. Its long tail acts as a rudder to help it corner during a high-speed chase. Perhaps most interesting of all, its claws are nonretractable, unlike the claws of other cats. These claws act like the spikes in track shoes, allowing for maximum traction.
