Darkness is a metaphor we use in a number of different realms. In the intellectual realm darkness refers to ignorance or the inability to comprehend something. In the moral realm darkness speaks of depravity and base behavior - often to things that have dire consequences for others. In the emotional ream when we talk of darkness we are often talking about things like sorrow and depression. Darkness in the spiritual context refers to the condition or position where we do not or cannot understand spiritual truth. Jesus Christ is spoken of in Scripture as the light of the world and the state of not knowing Jesus as being a place of darkness. Spiritual light is spoken of as 'light' and it is contrasted with spiritual darkness which is spoken of as death.
