The FINAL torque value should be 78 foot-pounds, but the tightening process goes in 3 stages. I don't recall off the top of my head just what the torque values are for the first and second stages.
39 ft pound. 14/27/39. In stages.
You need to refer to the manual. But to partially answer the question, you will need to torque the head bolts in three stages. Two of those stages require a torque wrench and the third requires a torque angle measuring gauge. I ve dont this twice and you REALLY need a manual for this OR check some Volvo forums.
Torque settings are , for the head bolts : These are done in three stages ... One... 39 - 44 nm Two ... 54 - 59 nm... Three.... tighten then to 90 degrees ( angle setting )
you don't have to have the head checked but its recommended. the head bolts are supposed to be torqued in counterclockwise order from the inside bolts to the outside bolts. torque them in order in three stages to 18 ft/lbs then to 27 ft/lbs then an additional 120 degrees except the front right stud which you torque to 90 degrees

Many of the newer head bolts are tightened all bolts to a specific torque spec then tighten all bolts another 90 degrees or whatever the manufacturer recommends and possibly even another step. The idea is to tighten in stages so that you do not warp the head.
