What are the stages of blood flow through the heart?

Stage one > general diastole

All muscles of the heart are relaxed

• Veins into the heart = dilated

• Atria = relaxed

• Atrioventricular valves = open
• Ventricles = relaxed
• Semilunar valve = closed

Stage two > atrial systole

Atria contract to push blood into the ventricles

• Veins into the heart = constricted

• Atria = contracted

• Atrioventricular valves = open

• Ventricles = relaxed

• Semilunar valve = closed

Stage three > ventricular systole

Ventricles contract to pump blood into the blood vessels

• Veins into the heart = dilated
• Atria = relaxed
• Atrioventricular valves = closed
• Ventricles = contracted
• Semilunar valves = open

Stage four > repeat
