Stage one > general diastole

All muscles of the heart are relaxed

  • Veins into the heart = dilated
  • Atria = relaxed
  • Atrioventricular valves = open
  • Ventricles = relaxed
  • Semilunar valve = closed

Stage two > atrial systole

Atria contract to push blood into the ventricles

  • Veins into the heart = constricted
  • Atria = contracted
  • Atrioventricular valves = open
  • Ventricles = relaxed
  • Semilunar valve = closed

Stage three > ventricular systole

Ventricles contract to pump blood into the blood vessels

  • Veins into the heart = dilated
  • Atria = relaxed
  • Atrioventricular valves = closed
  • Ventricles = contracted
  • Semilunar valves = open

An area of the heart can be in two states: - systole, a state of contraction/depolarisaton and diastole, a state of relaxation/repolarisation.

There are three stages to the flow of blood which occur in a continues cycle (i.e. One comes after the other but none start it:

Diastole

Atrial systole

Ventricular systole
