Stages of Breast CancerThere are five stages of Breast cancer (taken from a Mayo Clinic presentation):

• Stage 0 - Predictor of breast cancer; not yet a true cancer
• Stage I - Tumor no more than 2 centimeters (cm) in diameter; cancer has not spread to lymph nodes; has not spread to other areas of body. Five-year survival rate of stage 1 is 98 percent.
• Stage II - Larger tumor than state I 2 to 5 cm in diameter and may or may not have spread to axillary lymph nodes; tumor more than 5 cm in diameter, but cancer has not spread to axillary lymph nodes; tumor less than 2 cm in diameter, but cancer has spread to less than four axillary lymph nodes. Five-year survival rate is 76 to 88 percent.
• Stage III - Known as locally advanced cancer, has spread to the lymph nodes near breast - those located under arm or by collarbone - but not to more distant parts of body; Inflammatory breast cancer that has spread to the breast skin, causing swelling and redness, is classified as stage III breast cancer. Five-year survival rate is 49 to 56 percent.
• Stage IV - Most advanced form of breast cancer; cancer cells have spread to distant parts of body. Treatment may help shrink or control the cancer, but usually won't completely cure the cancer.

Breast cancer has 5 stages. Stage 0 is used to describe non invasive types, such as DCIS. Stage 1 describes invasive types with tumors no larger then 2cm and the tumor has not spread out of the breast. Stage 2 describes tumors larger larger then 2, but smaller then 5cm are found and small groups of cancer cells, between 0.2 and 2mm are found in the form of lymph nodes. Stage 3 is for cancer that is found in 4-9 lymph nodes, the tumor is larger then 5cm and the breast feels warm and may be swollen. Stage 4 is what is often referred to as "Advanced Stage" and is often when the first diagnosis is made.

There are 5 stages of breat development.

Stage 1: Childhood

Stage is the childhood stage, before puberty begins. The breasts have not started to develop. The nipples are the only raised part. Otherwise, the breasts are flat.

Step 2: Breast Buds Develop

The breasts start to develop during Stage 2. A small, flat, button-like bu forms under each nipple. It contains fat, milk gland and tissue. The breast bud raises the nipple making it stick out from the chest. The areola gets bigger and is wider than Stage 1.

Some girls reach this stage when they are only seven or eight. Other girls don't start Stage 2 until they are nearly fourteen years old but most girls reach this stage when they are eight and a half to eleven years old.

Stage 3: Development Continues

Breast development continues during Stage 3. The breasts become larger. The areolas also continue to get bigger. They stand out more from the chest. You may notice that the nipples, too, are getting larger. In this stage, the breasts are adult in shape, but they are smaller than they will be when you are an adult.

Girls usually reach this stage when they're ten to thirteen years old, but some girls reach Stage 3 when they're younger than ten or older than thirteen. Stage 3 may last a few months or as long as two years.

Stage 4: Nipple and Areola Form Mound

In Stage 4, the areola and nipple continue to enlarge. They form a separate little mound on the breast. They stick out above the rest of the breast. Figure 15 shows the difference in the nipple and areola in Stage 3, Stage 4, and Stage 5. The breasts are often "pointy" or cone-shaped in Stage 4.

Some girls skip Stage 4 and go directly to Stage 5. Some never develop beyond Stage 4. Still other girls develop a raised mound again in Stage 5.

Girls often reach this stage when they're twelve to fourteen years old, but as with the other stages, many girls reach Stage 4 at ages that are outside this range. Stage 4 may last anywhere from eight months to two years.

Stage 5: Adult

In Stage 5, the nipple and areola no longer form a separate mound on the breast. This is the adult stage. The breasts are fully developed. However, some girls' breasts do continue to grow somewhat even after they've reached this stage.

Even though the breasts have reached their adult size, they may not be very large. In fact, some grown women have breasts smaller than the ones shown here.

Most girls reach Stage 5 between the ages of thirteen and six teen, but some girls reach this stage when they're younger than thirteen and others when they're older than sixteen.

Stage 3C: Cancer is found in 10 or more axillary lymph nodes, lymph nodes near the collarbone, or internal mammary nodes.

Stage 4: Tumor of any size and its cancer cells have spread to nearby and distant lymph nodes.

Symptoms of advanced breast cancer:

1) breast pain

2) red, pitted skin over your entire breast

3) swelling in all part of your breast

4) a nipple discharge other than breast milk

5) bloody discharge from your nipple

6) unexplained change in the size of your breast

7) inverted nipple

8) changes to the appearance of the skin on your breasts

9) swelling under your arm
