Puberty is very variable. Boys can start it at different ages and they don't all go through the various stages in the same order. Here are some visible signs of puberty, which might happen in any order: Growth of pubic hair on the scrotum and above the penis. Growth of hair on the ankles and in the armpits. Growth of facial hair. The penis will grow longer and thicker, the scrotum will darken in colour and hang lower to accomodate the increasing size of the testes. They will sweat more and their sweat will begin to smell. They may get spots and blackheads. They will grow taller and their muscles will begin to develop. They will find themselves thinking about sex a lot and they will get erections of the penis. They might find they mentally compare the size of their penis with other boys in the showers at school, this doesn't necessarily mean that they are gay, just that they are curious which is perfectly normal. They will also feel the urge to masturbate and when they do, at some point they will begin to produce semen. Nocturnal emissions (wet dreams) can start. Their voice will lower in pitch as the larynx (voice box or Adam's apple) stretches and enlargens. Mood swings may become common (their family will suffer because of them too). There is no definitive end point to puberty but by around 21 (if not sooner) they will most probably have reached their maximum height and growth, but muscle, hair and body mass will continue.
Male puberty begins around 11 to 13-years-of-age and finishes around 17 to 19-years-of-age on average.
