The castles I have been to have had varied types of stairs. Some are made from stone and they get more narrow as you get closer to the top. The later castles have wide broad stairs and they were designed to accommodate the women's dresses with a bustle. The Mott and bailey castles had wooden stairs that were rather narrow and not well made.
