A star is a huge cloud of mostly hydrogen gas pulled together by gravity and because of the atoms very high gravitational potential energy, which is coverted to kenetic energy, the hydrogen atoms start to fuse. This fussion sets off a large amount of energy in which some of the energy is converted into visible light. This is what we see in a star. The visible light emmited by (mostly) hydrogen atoms being fused together. Einstiens equation E=mc2 describes why this fussion of matter gives off so much energy.
