First, you must be capable of distinguishing the real world from the world of fantasy and make-believe. The robots that you see at the movies are not real. They don't exist except in the world of make-believe.
Second, if you want to build a robot, decide what you want it to do. If you wan a robotic arm that opens a door whenever something approaches, determine the type of sensor you want to use, run the output to the appropriate relay, SCR or other switching device, connect that output to a hydraulic, pneumatic or electromagnetic actuator, then connect the actuator to the arm, making certain that the arm is attached appropriately. Once you have that completed, you have a robotic door opener.
When the sensor detects the presence of an object, it sends a signal to the relay, SCR or other switching device, the output activates the actuator, the actuator moves the arm and the arm opens the door. It's magic... or robotics.
Robot Building was created in 1986.

A good place to find instructions on building your own robot would be in the book 'Robot Building For Dummies'. The book offers a step by step guide to building robots and was written by Roger Arrick and Nancy Stevenson and published in 2003.

Robots are gender neutral. When building a robot the manufacturer may decide to endow it with what we may consider to be male or female characteristics, but the robot will still be gender neutral. And of course, the builder of the robot may give it whatever name he/she decides.
