The men in the continental army were literate and committed to the cause. They did not need the same close supervision as the British Solders. When they understood what to do, they would do it and not wait for orders if none were forthcoming.

The men in the continental army knew and used Indian tactics.

Americans did not follow European Rules of Engagement. They would shoot the British officers and the common solders had no idea what to do. The loss of an American Officer did not cause any such problem.

The Americans knew the land. They knew birch and other roots provided vitamin C in winter. The English army could not function in winter.
