A normal violin has 4 strings.

Starting with the lowest sounding string, the strings must be tuned to the following notes:

  1. the G below 'Middle C'
  2. the D above 'Middle C'
  3. the A above 'Middle C'
  4. the E above that A.

To get the best possible sound from the instrument each string must be made of a different thickness. The lowest sounding string is the thickest and the highest sounding string is the thinnest.
