There are three commonly referred to subatomic particles in an atom. The two that are in the atom's nucleus are the proton and the neutron. The one that zips around outside of the nucleus is the electron.

There are more than 3 types of subatomic particles. But the ones you are probably looking for are proton, neutron, and electron.

But protons and neutrons are both considered "composite" particles, meaning they are made up of smaller particles.

Other subatomic particles are the 6 flavors of quarks, the 6 types of leptons, and the 12 guages of bosons.

The subatomic parts of the atom are the up quarks, the down quarks and the electrons. Protons are made from two up quarks and one down quark. Neutrons

are made from two down quarks and one up quark. Electrons are subatomic

particles not made from anything else.

What does it mean when a subatomic particle is in the atom?

Basically, atoms are made up of subatomic particles. Subatomic, sub- meaning smaller that, so subatomic particles means "a particle smaller than an atom". So It means that it is a particle within the atom.
