There are many types of congenital heart defects, each of which has its own set of signs and symptoms. The most common type of congenital heart defect is called a ventricular septal defect (VSD), which is usually asymptomatic immediately after birth. Significant VSDs usually produce a characteristic heart murmur that can be heard through a stethoscope placed over the chest.

A congenital heart defect is a problem with the structure of the heart. It is present at birth. Congenital heart defects are the most common type of major birth defect. A baby's heart begins to develop shortly after conception. During development, structural defects can occur. These defects can involve the walls of the heart, the valves of the heart and the arteries and veins near the heart. Congenital heart defects can disrupt the normal flow of blood through the heart. The blood flow can * Slow down * * Go in the wrong direction or to the wrong place * Be blocked completely Treatment for the defect can include medicines, surgery and other medical procedures and heart transplants. The treatment depends on the type and severity of the defect and a child's age, size and general health. Today, many children born with complex heart defects grow to adulthood and lead productive lives.

Heart defects are either acyanotic (blood passes through the lungs normally) or cyanotic (blood passes through the lungs inefficiently). Cyanotic heart defects cause blueness in the lips and nails. It also causes clubbing in the hands and feet.

Heart defects can further be classified into the following types (or combinations of these defects in a single heart):

-valve defects (broken or clogged "one-way-doors" between the heart chambers)

-septum defects (one or more holes in the wall between the heart chambers)

-ventricular defects (malformations in the lower chambers of the heart)

-creative heart blueprint (heart formed wrong - everything is backwards or vessels are misplaced.)

There are many medicinal and surgical corrections for these defects.
