The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the base of the neck just below the Adam's apple. It's responsible for producing hormones that regulate our metabolism, as well as other body organs.

An overactive thyroid, also known as hypothyroidism, occurs when the thyroid doesn't produce enough hormones. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include weight gain, fatigue, loose bowels, forgetfulness, depression, sore muscles, dry skin, brittle nails, fluid retention, and for women this can also include frequent miscarriages and an inconsistent menstrual cycle.
