Some of the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) go into three groups. One, Combined (the most popular sub type) involves symptoms of both inattentiveness and hyperactivity. Second, Inattentive ADHD (known as ADD) is marked by impaired attention and concentration. Third, Hyperactive-impulsive ADHD is marked with hyperactivity without inattentiveness.

There are two main types: with hyperactivity and without (hypo activity-).

The hyper children are the easy ones to spot. Signs: excessive talking ("motormouth"), does dangerous things without thought of consequences, room is usually a mess, very disorganized, runs around constantly, can't sit still Teachers complain they don't follow directions, messy desk, can't stay in the seat, talk all the time, etc. Frequently, you can spot them by how they stand in line at school (really!) they are the ones jumping around all over the place, unable to stand and wait patiently like the other children. There is very little impulse control- no thought before acting on their impulse to do something. They are frequently fiddling with some small object or another- pencils, little toys, etc. However: they can often focus on Video Games for hours at a time. This does not mean they are not ADHD- just that video games are interesting enough to hold their attention. If one child or parent has it, it is likely another family member will have it as well.

Hypo activity is much harder to spot- they frequently are described as "dreamers". They are seldom in trouble at school for misbehaving because they are quiet, lost in an inner world. I've found their gaze is frequently sort of soft and unfocused looking.

Do not be persuaded that people grow out of it- they don't. They learn to cope with it, hopefully.

In adults, look for: inability to organize work, "piles" of unfinished projects, magazines, etc, in the home or workplace. Difficulty finishing projects. Poor impulse control that can lead to overspending, overeating, etc. Often they will "self medicate" with coffee, cigarettes, or drugs. (stimulant drugs have the opposite effect on the ADD adult or child-). Studies show that children receiving medication for ADD are no more likely to abuse drugs than their peers.
