To draw a self portrait of yourself, either use a picture of yourself or a mirror. Start by lightly drawing outlines of major features, like the face, hair, eyes and nose shapes, drawing the eyes half way down the face. Use a finger or smearing tool to shadow the face and add shape. Draw thick lines and add shadows and highlights to make the hair.
Keep in mind two things. Value and Edges.
Value: squint and look at your drawing, then at your subject. Value is the "light and dark" aspect of your drawing. "Realistic" drawings (naturalistic, really) have the right balance of light and dark. How light/dark the shadow side of the face is relative to the light side is crucial. Really. Squint and adjust. Squint and adjust...
Edges: choose carefully where you keep your edges soft and where you (bam!) pop in a hard edge. Look at masters like John Singer Sargent or Everett Raymond Kinstler. Check out how they do hair. No obsessive strands. Just a big blocky shape. But wait.
If all the edges of the hair shape were soft, it wouldn't work. Nor would it work if all of the edges were hard. Look closely. They chose their battles carefully, where to go with a hard edge and where to keep it soft. Now look at the noses. Look carefully. Look at where the edges are soft and where they are hard.
