∙ 12y agoPolitical science has many theoretical foundations but, as with most sciences, it chiefly originated from philosophy. Early and proto-political philosophers focused on how to organise societies using politics (e.g.) Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Machiavelli, etc.) to some specific end. Through investigation and comparison of how different modes of political organisation led to varying outcomes, some philosophers began to try and make systematic analyses of politics over history or in specific contexts (e.g.) Hobbes, Montesquieu, Marx). The development of sociological and economic theory had a major impact on political science, and I would argue that only the emergence of social science itself, after the early 19th century, allowed the creation of political science as a separate field from philosophy.
