In Jules Verne's novel "From the Earth to the Moon," the fictional character Michel Ardan is sent to the moon using a giant cannon called the Columbiad, designed by the members of the Baltimore Gun Club. He also wrote stuff such as Michael Strogoff about, essentially, a Czarist IKGB agent, and things like around the world in 80 days which are not science fiction as he described no technics beyond his period. But, he did found the genre of science fiction, and how!
