The residents of Judea (southern Israel) were taken captive in 586 BC, by the Babylonians. Though many returned to Israel 70 years later when the Persians freed them from the Babylonian captivity, a great number chose to stay behind in Babylon, for they had created a very comfortable life for themselves there.
Although commonly referred to as kings, the visitors to Jesus that are described in Matthew's Gospel were not kings at all. They were magoi (Latin: magi, sing magus). Magi were the priests of the Persian religion, Zoroastrianism. Matthew, by having the priests come to worship Jesus, wanted to show that even the priests of this great religion looked up to Jesus. In more recent times, the Zoroastrian connection became less important, and the priests began to be called wise men or just kings.

The gift givers in Betlehem were known as Magi, they were the star gazers of the time; Astrologists, Alchemists, perhaps, etc. They were not kings and there were probably more than three.

Rosca de Reyes is eaten on January 6th, the Three Kings Day, which is said to be the day that the Three Kings came to visit the baby Jesus after his birth in Bethlehem.
No one knows their names, or if they were kings, or if there were three of them. All the Bible says is that "wise men from the east" came to see Jesus. Also, they came when Jesus was probably about 2 years old, and living in Nazareth. They were not present at the stable in Bethlehem at all.
When the three Kings saw the star, it was in the eastern sky. The Star of Bethlehem that announced the birth of the Christ Child is believed to have been the first comet of note.

In the dioceses of the United States this feast has been moved to the Sunday between January 2 and January 8.Three Kings day is January 6th in almost every religion. This is the twelth day after Christmas and the day the three kings (who were not actually kings) arrived to the baby Jesus in Bethlehem.
