The question of whether or not Cromwell was breaking the law when he attacked Drogheda is difficult to answer. Cromwell was a rebel who had overthrown the Monarchy. He had illegally seized the government of England. He had also illegally seized the government of the Pale of Ireland which included Drogheda. Still, he controlled the lawful government of that area at the time. Arthur Ashton, the leader of the Irish rebels at Drogheda, refused to recognize Cromwell as the lawful ruler. He sided with those wanting to restore the monarchy to Ireland. He decided to fight to the death rather than recognize Cromwell. Cromwell had broken the law when he killed King Charles I and seized power. Ashton broke the law when he rebelled against the ruler, Cromwell, to reinstate the monarchy. Who is guilty in war?

The Scottish people hated Oliver Cromwell for several reasons. Firstly, he defeated the Scottish army during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, leading to the occupation and repression of Scotland by English forces. Additionally, Cromwell's religious policies, such as the abolition of the Presbyterian Church in Scotland, were viewed as oppressive and a threat to Scottish identity and autonomy. Finally, Cromwell's authoritarian rule and disregard for Scottish political institutions and traditions further fueled resentment towards him.

King Charles 1 was beheaded in January 1649, and England became a Commonwealth, a de facto Republic. This amounted to the monarchy being overthrown, but only temporarily as Charles 11 was crowned King in 1661. However, after Charles return to England all legal documents were re-dated as if he had succeeded his father in 1649, so there is a case (with hindsight) that England's monarchy was never overthrown. But you wouldn't have wanted to say that to Oliver Cromwell!
