Within the first few seconds of any form of activity, cells will rely on stored ATP already made within the cell. From that point up to about 90 seconds, cells will use lactic acid fermentation as a quick burst of continuous ATP production (2 ATP molecules per molecule of glucose). During this time, aerobic cell respiration is able to crank through all three stages (glycolysis, Kreb's Cycle, and electron transport chain) to produce 36-38 ATP molecules per molecule of glucose that is broken down. After about 90 seconds and up to 15-20 minutes your cells will break down the glucose from recently digested food a well as glycogen (stored glucose). Only after 20 minutes of continuous respiration will your body start to break down fat reserves as a source of energy.
