I am currently doing Applied physics in College. In my particular college, applied physics is coursework based, there are no exams whereas for Physics, there are.Applied physics, at my college, involves a lot of practical work and stems into fields of Biology and Chemistry alongside Physics, focusing on all three for a first year during a National Diploma course, and only physics during the second year.Generally, Applied Physics refers to the use of physics; how it is used in various fields eg engineering. Whereas, Physics or sometimes called Pure Physics can be more theoretical, new research, new areas to explore.The work being done at CERN in Europe, the large hadron collider where atomic particles are being collided would be Physics. The two fields will largely overlap and the discoveries made in Physics will leak into Applied Physics.

Quantum physics is an area of physics that focuses mainly on the properties and behaviour of sub-atomic particles. Physics in general can be the study of anything from the life cycle of a star to the effects of gravitational fields.
The main branches of classical physics include: Classical Mechanics Electromagnetism Classical Optics Thermodynamics Fluid mechanics In modern physics, there are a lot of different fields of study including: The Special Theory of Relativity The General Theory of Relativity Quantum Mechanics. Nuclear Particle Physics Solid state physics, incuding semiconductors. Statistical thermodynamics Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) In Modern Physics, optics and electricity & magnetism have been unified, especially through the use of Special Relativity. [Three of the most important fields of Modern Physics had been left out. I have put them first , second, and third on the list. By definition, these are Modern Physics because they are products of the 20th century. Also, some very important parts of Classical Physics had been left out, such as fluid mechanics.]
