There are four tones in pinyin. I'll just use the letter a as an example;
First tone: ā Second tone: á Third tone: ă Fourth tone: à

For example: māo, mēi, kǒu. 3) The tone mark should be put above the latter vowel if a syllable contains a final "iu" or "ui." For example: diū, guī.

Díkwíidi azlį́į́?---What time is it? The marks above vowels make them high tone. The marks below make them nasalized. If a high tone is followed by a vowel without a tone it is falling tone. Two vowels in a row means you hold the sound longer
