That the Jewish nation would be persecuted for their wrongdoing to Jesus. This happened in the Holocaust. One German official who was about to be hanged realized that this was prophecied.
A NT perspective:Jesus said a great deal about the scribes and Pharisees, but He specifically taught His disciples to "beware" these things in their regard:1) False doctrine
Matthew 16:6 - Then Jesus said to them, "Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees."
This confused the disciples at first, so after an explanatory passage, verse 12 reads: Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
This is an extraordinarily apt teaching. Leaven is not the bread itself, but even in small quantities, it has a profound effect. Bad leaven, too little, or too much, and the bread is not as intended. The lesson is that false teaching, in whatever form or amount, ruins pure doctrine just as misused leaven ruins pure dough.
2) False pride and hypocrisy
Mark 12:38-40 - Then He said to them in His teaching, "Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, who devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation." [Parallel passage - Luke 20:46, 47]
Luke 12:1 - In the meantime, when an innumerable multitude of people had gathered together, so that they trampled one another, He began to say to His disciples first of all, "Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy."
[Quotes from NKJV]
The scribes and Pharisees charged Jesus with blasphemy, claiming that he was claiming to be God, which was punishable by death according to Jewish law.
The Pharisees, the Priests, the Lawyers, the Scribes, and the Sadducees.
Scribes, Pharisees, Romans and the people
No. He made a new tradition, for which his leaders, the Scribes and Pharisees, killed him.
These people are the scribes and Pharisees of Jesus day they were the teachers of Judaism.
The scribes and Pharisees were the "spiritual" leaders of the day. But they were far from the truth. Again and again Jesus tried to get them to see they were "lost sinnners" like any other person. But they were proud and eventually plotted to have Jesus killed because Jesus was a threat to them as leaders.
The Sadducees opposed Jesus, they were the Temple , priestly group. He was also opposed by some of the Pharisees who were the faction which represented the Lay folk.
No I don't think so. The parable was told as a rebuke to the scribes and Pharisees of Jesus' time. Jesus came to call the nation of Israel to repent but the scribes and Pharisees thought Jesus should be talking with them the "spiritual leaders" not the common people. The father in the parable represents God and shows His desire for Israel to repent and turn to Him.
Not all Christians. Speaking to the crowds at the temple, Jesus delivers another scathing denunciation of the scribes and Pharisees.
The crowd was just ordinary people who followed Jesus. Jesus had been addressing the scribes and pharisees when a man from the crowd asked Jesus to settle a family dispute. Jesus told the parable as part of His reply to the man.
They were jealous that Jesus spent time with the ordinary people. The scribes and Pharisees thought they were the spiritual people of that time. Again and again Jesus showed them that they were far from the truth. So they criticized Him and eventually had Jesus killed. But that was all part of God's plan.
When Jesus tells this parable some Pharisees and scribes are also listening: Luk 15:1 Then all the tax collectors and the sinners drew near to Him to hear Him. Luk 15:2 And the Pharisees and scribes complained, saying, "This Man receives sinners and eats with them." Luk 15:3 So He spoke this parable to them, saying: ......................... In the parable the father represents God, the youngest son represents Israel and the oldest son represents the scribes and Pharisees. The oldest son is prejudiced towards the youngest son because the youngest son is treated well, given a lot of attention etc by the father. In the gospels we can see Jesus paid a lot of attention to the ordinary people the scribes and Pharisees of the day were jealous because they thought they were the spiritual men of Israel. They were put out that Jesus "received sinners" they thought Jesus should have been spending time with them - they were the spiritual ones.
