Step up and Step down Transformers.

At the electric power stations step up Transformers are used so as to step up the generated voltage to several times and so the current gets reduced cosiderably. As current becomes very less then loss of electric power in the form of heating the wire will be very much reduced. The formula for power loss in the form of heat is I2R

This high voltage is to be once again brought down to the normal level for the purpose of operating the electric and electronic goods, so a step down transformer is needed to do so.

Why a two winding transformer is used instead of single winding transformer?

You need two windings because that is the purpose of the transformer - to convert one voltage into another. If there were only one winding, it would be an inductor, or a special case called an autotransformer, but that is still "sort of" two windings.AnswerThe major advantage of a two-winding transformer (a 'mutual transformer') over a single-winding transformer (an 'autotransformer') is that a two-winding transformer provides electrical isolation between the secondary and primary circuits. This is very important for safety reasons and there are many circumstances in which the use of an autotransformer is not permitted.

What are the purposes of performing no load test for the transformer?

These two tests are performed on a transformer to determine (i) equivalent circuit of transformer(ii)voltage regulation of transformer(iii) efficiency of transformer. The power required for theseOpen Circuit test and Short Circuit test on transformeris equal to the power loss occurring in the transformer.

What is the difference between VT and PT transformer?

Both are same.AnswerA 'PT' is a 'potential transformer', the preferred term in North America, for what is termed a 'VT', or 'voltage transformer', in Britain. Two names for exactly the same instrument transformer.

What is the advantage of an open delta transformer?

An open-delta connection is a method of providing a three-phase supply, using two single-phase transformers. It is particularly useful if , say, one single-phase transformer, part of a three single-phase transformers forming a three-phase transformer bank, becomes damaged -allowing the two remaining transformers to provide a temporary three-phase supply to the load. The drawback with this connection is that the capacity of the transformer bank is reduced, and it can only provide a lower load current.

What is Transformer in Hindi?

Transformer in Hindi is called "ट्रांसफ़ॉर्मर" (pronounced as "transformer"). It is a device used to transfer electrical energy between two or more circuits through electromagnetic induction.
